iOS 9.2.1 Jailbreak Update! New Utility For iOS 9.2 Instead? PP’s Crazy Claims

Jailbreak and iOS 9.2.1 Update! PP Claims New Utility for iOS 9.2 Instead – Recently, ensuing the release of iOS 9.2.1, a number of reports perpetuating false information have begun circulating throughout the jailbreak blogosphere – in fact, the story was even picked up by the jailbreak sub reddit, which sadly furthered the reach of the incorrect report. Said report originated from PP, which doesn’t lend to its credibility whatsoever, makes the widely inaccurate claim that iOS 9.2.1 won’t be jailbroken before iOS 9.2 and instead of targeting the latest public firmware (9.2.1), TaiG will release a jailbreak for iOS 9.2 instead. That’s not the case at all; for a complete break down and explanation as to why we’re just as likely to see an iOS 9.2.1 jailbreak, continue reading past the break.

Jailbreak iOS 9.2.1 Versus iOS 9.2

The above video from popular YouTuber iCrackUriDevice delves into the very topic we’re about to highlight – therefore featuring it in today’s article is a perfect fit.
PP’s entire case rests on this! First of all, the crux for PP’s rather unfounded claims is that iOS 9.2.1 patches key vulnerabilities that could have been utilized in the creation of a new jailbreak and therefore the group who will likely issue the next tool (TaiG) will instead jailbreak iOS 9.2.1’s predecessor: iOS 9.2.
While it is true that iOS 9.2.1 does patch vulnerabilities, it closes less than both iOS 9.1 and even iOS 9.2, the firmware that PP claims the next jailbreak will target! Here, take a look at iOS 9.2.1, iOS 9.2 and iOS 9.1‘s security fixes as outlined on Apple.com. Note that the only patched security vulnerabilities in iOS 9.2.1 that could potentially aid in jailbreak development are as follows:
  • CVE-2016-1717
  • CVE-2016-1720
  • CVE-2016-1721
  • Several of the WebKit fixes

iOS 9.2 Closes More Important Exploits

Jailbreak iOS 9.2 Exploits
Furthermore, iOS 9.2 closes three residual exploits leftover from the Pangu iOS 9 jailbreak that Apple left un-patched in iOS 9.1 (the firmware that rendered the jailbreak useless), all of which can be considered more valuable than the above vulnerabilities considering they were actually exploited and used in a jailbreak.
A simple cmd + f (or ctrl + f for Windows) will bring up the “find” box, from there type in “Pangu” on the security pages for iOS 9.1 and iOS 9.2, you’ll see that actual jailbreak exploits were closed instead of simply vulnerabilities that could possibly be exploited in a jailbreak.

TaiG Hates PP

TaiG Jailbreak vs PP
Also, if that weren’t enough, TaiG absolutely hates PP! Not only did they port their iOS 8.1.x jailbreak to Mac OS X, but they also ripped off their code and stole their utility for the iOS 8.4 jailbreak. Initially TaiG released their last jailbreak utility for iOS 8.3 and before they had the chance to adapt it to iOS 8.4, PP just slapped a new UI on the TaiG jailbreak, changed the line referencing supported firmwares and called it their own.
To this day, TaiG even has a “notice” up on their site calling PP out for stealing their hard work and ripping off the TaiG jailbreak code.
In conclusion! By PP’s logic, iOS 9.1 should be the first firmware to jailbreak before both iOS 9.2 and iOS 9.2.1 considering iOS 9.2 closes far more valuable exploits. To put it simply: main jailbreak developers will never target a firmware that isn’t the latest public firmware. If TaiG or Pangu were to jailbreak iOS 9.2 before iOS 9.2.1, they would have done so when iOS 9.2.1 was still in beta stages, just like Pangu did for iOS 9.0.2 when they discovered iOS 9.1 beta closed an exploit they were planning on using.

Final Thoughts

Eventually, once TaiG deems it an adequate period for a release (based on a number of varying factors we’ll discuss in a future article), a new jailbreak will be released to function on both iOS 9.2 and iOS 9.2.1.
